Join Ashley and Rachel as they discuss a new course offered at Langara College’s Library Technician program – Indigenous Communities and Libraries. Ashley and Rachel will discuss the course content, pedagogy, and assignments. They will emphasize the importance of including Indigenous voices in library education and the impact diverse voices have. They hope to see course offerings like this expand in library education, as libraries play a pivotal role in shaping constructs of knowledge, knowledge production, and knowledge validation.
Presenter/Facilitator Bio
Ashley Edwards
Ashley has Métis, Dutch, and Scottish heritage, and is a citizen of Métis Nation British Columbia. She was raised on Stó:lō téméxw, in the Fraser Valley, BC, and currently lives on the shared lands of the Tsleil-Waututh, Qayqayt, Stz’uminus, Musqueam, and Kwikwetlam First Nations, colonially known as Burnaby, BC.
Ashley is the Indigenous Initiatives and Instruction librarian with Simon Fraser University Library, where she supports faculty with decolonizing pedagogy initiatives and the general instruction program. She also teaches in the Library Technician program at Langara College.
Rachel Chong
Rachel is of Métis-settler descent and a citizen of Métis Nation BC. Her maternal grandfather is Métis from the Red River Settlement in what is now known as St. Boniface, Manitoba. As an urban Métis, she is grateful to have been born and raised on Coast Salish lands where she continues to work, live, and learn. She has over 15 years’ experience working in libraries in various capacities.
She has been in the position of Indigenous Engagement and Subject Liaison Librarian at KPU for three years. She also teaches in the Library Technician program at Langara College.
