Contemporary Issues in Collections Management:
Ebook Pricing & "Just in Time" Collection Development
In a section of a Collection Management class at the University of Alberta in Fall 2022, student assignments were designed to facilitate work in the subsequent year that allowed the creation of an openly licensed textbook, "Contemporary Issues in Collection Management" (https://openeducationalberta.ca/ciicm/). This session will present two chapters from this open educational resource: ebook pricing issues and "just in time" collection development.
Amy Nowakowsky & Kat Voy will provide an overview of the challenges faced by libraries with ebook pricing in both public and academic libraries. This includes some background into digital demand in libraries, copyright, and publishers, along with some actions libraries have been taking to fight increasing ebook prices.
Melissa Ramsey will provide an overview of the background and current context of "just in time" collection development, where materials are acquired as requested rather than “just in case” they are needed. This overview will focus on the acquisition of e-resources for academic libraries, including some of the current challenges and proposed responses to these challenges.
