Lowering the Barrier to Copyright: Resources for Gamification of Copyright Law in Educational Spaces

2023-08-22 Microlearning Series - Lowering the Barrier to Copyright

There is a barrier to understanding copyright law because of its complexities, nuances, and legal jargon. This barrier, along with the fear of copyright infringement, have created confusion and frustration around the use of copyrighted materials, leading to a concept known as copyright anxiety. Copyright anxiety may even cause someone to abandon their creative endeavours all together for fear of copyright infringement, real or perceived. How can this legal information become more accessible and user-friendly? Through the use of interactive games.

In this session, Taylor McPeak (she/her) showcases a game called "Copyright Dough", which helps to make copyright more accessible to learners. Taylor will also provide additional examples of her gamified approach to teaching about copyright.

Presenter:

Taylor McPeak (she/her) is the Copyright Advisor for Mount Royal University and in her role she provides education, training, and operational leadership to the University community on matters relating to copyright.

Taylor has many years of experience providing copyright-related education, training and coordination in school libraries, private industry, and post-secondary education. Taylor holds a Master of Library and Information Studies from the University of Alberta and a Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences from the University of Lethbridge.
