About three years ago I was introduced to the Polyvagal Theory and was inspired to develop a basic understanding of the autonomic nervous system and its role in clinical counseling and therapy. Then I began leading clients through some awareness exercises. They responded well to exploring their triggers and familiarizing themselves with different states of functioning from grounded and calm to fight, flee or freeze to a collapsed, give up or depressed state. I was heartened by reports of improved emotional regulation and relationship interactions. Part of the process involved a list of strategies to either slow down or speed up their triggered reactions.
